Digital Tide-Coordinated Shoreline

چکیده
The shoreline is one of the most important features on earth’s surface. It is valuable to a diverse user community. But the dynamic nature of the shorelinemakes it dif cult to be represented in a naturally dynamic style and to be utilized in applications. The of cially usedshoreline, for examplein nauticalcharts,is the so-calledtide-coordinatedshoreline. It is also the shoreline that makes the computation of shoreline changes and associated environmentalchangesmeaningful.Mappingof the tide-coordinatedshorelinehas been very costly. On the other hand, instantaneous shorelines extracted from different data sourcesmay be available. Also, high-resolutionsatellite and airborne imagery have the capacityof stereo imaging and can be used to extract instantaneousshorelinesat a high accuracy and low cost. This article proposes an approach to derivation of digital tidecoordinated shorelines from (a) those instantaneous shorelines and (b) digital coastal surface models and a digital water surface model. Some preliminary study results, analysis, and the potential of the approach are discussed.

Empirical Analysis of Aerial Camera Filters for Shoreline Mapping
Accurate, up-to-date national shoreline is critical in defining the territorial limits of the Unites States, updating nautical charts, and managing coastal resources. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) delineates the interpreted shoreline photogrammetrically using tide-coordinated stereo photography acquired with black-and-white infrared emulsion. In this paper, we prese...

This paper presents results from the second year of a project on coastal management and decision making sponsored by the National Science Foundation Digital Government Program and carried out by a multidisciplinary research team. As one of the primary goals of the project, tide-coordinated shoreline modeling and mapping requires the integration of multi-source spatio-temporal data that include ...
متن کاملA Comparative Study of Shoreline Mapping Techniques
Shorelines are critical information in a Coastal Geographic Information System (CGIS). Shorelines have a dynamic nature. Hence, their definition, mapping, and subsequent utilization are a more complicated issue than people usually think. Different approaches to shoreline mapping are described and analyzed in this paper. In particular, a new method is presented in which tide-coordinated shorelin...
متن کاملModeling of Hydrodynamic Factors for Management of Coastal Hazards, Case Study: Khamir Port, Persian Gulf, Iran
In coastal areas, hydrodynamic factors make changes in shorelines geomorphology. This can affect coastal facilities and cause hazards to human societies in the areas. This study has investigated the influence of wave and tide properties on Khamir Port, Hormoz Strait in coast of Persian Gulf. The purpose of the study is to make a mathematical regional and local modeling of water level fluctuatio...

Extended abstract 1- Introduction Coastal systems are very dynamic, and their movement is relatively fast due to the collision of onshore and marine environment. The majority of the world's population is concentrated along with the coastal areas. Hormuz Strait coasts are affected by morphological variables due to the hydrodynamics of the sea and the dynamics of coastal and onshore environme...
